Occupational health spirometry software for South Africa
Medical surveillance spirometry that stands up to audit: every manoeuvre graded to ATS/ERS 2019, GLI-2022 z-scores, practice-branded reports and CSV export - built in Cape Town by Advanced Medical Engineering (AME) for occupational-health clinics, mines and industry.
Built for the rooms that do the volume
Occupational-health clinics & OHNPs
Fast, coached testing at 335 Hz with live flow-volume and volume-time curves. Automatic ATS/ERS 2019 acceptability and repeatability so a session that fails is flagged before the worker leaves the chair.
Mines & heavy industry
Offline-first and load-shedding-aware - the test does not depend on the site's connectivity. Patient database, pre/post comparison and periodic-surveillance history live locally on the PC.
GP rooms & pulmonology
Pre/post-bronchodilator responsiveness, slow VC, MVV, 6-minute walk test, GOLD 2026 staging, small-airways indices and a clinician-reviewed AI interpretation and referral draft.
Medical surveillance in South Africa: what the software has to get right
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (85 of 1993) and the Mine Health and Safety Act (29 of 1996), employers run periodic medical surveillance for workers exposed to respiratory hazards - silica and coal dust, welding fume, isocyanates, flour, wood dust and more. Spirometry is the core lung-function test in those programmes, and it only has value if it is repeatable across years and comparable across sites. That means:
- Standardised quality. SpiroWright applies the ATS/ERS 2019 acceptability, usability and repeatability rules to every effort and grades the session A–F. See ATS/ERS 2019 in SpiroWright.
- Correct reference values. GLI-2012 (LMS) and the race-neutral GLI Global 2022 equations, with GLI 'Other' available for African / South African populations; results as z-scores, LLN/ULN and percent-predicted, source cited on the report.
- Daily calibration you can prove. 3-litre syringe and motor calibration with an ATS/ERS 2019 pass/fail verdict, BTPS from a live weather station or manual/altitude entry - relevant on the Reef as much as at the coast.
- Records that survive an audit. One-page and full reports (HTML / PDF / PNG / CSV) with z-score bars, acceptability matrix, practice branding and QR verification; HIV / TB / pack-year fields; SAMA procedure codes and ICD-10 suggestions (verify against your scheme).
- Longitudinal comparison. Patient-history comparison and pre/post views so a falling FEV1 trend is visible at the next annual medical, not buried in a filing cabinet.
Cost model that suits surveillance volume
SpiroWright is a free download. Every verified account starts with 1000 free tokens; a test costs 50 tokens; tokens never expire and there is no annual licence or per-seat subscription. Bulk packs bring the per-test price down to about R33 (see pricing in rands). A clinic that already owns an AME / IQTeQ sensor keeps its hardware - see the HEXAR Core spirometer.
Hygiene & workflow
Single-use bacterial/viral filter and disposable mouthpiece per worker; USB-powered handheld head; runs on any Windows 10/11 laptop. Practice branding, patient database and offline records mean a mobile surveillance team can run a full day on a laptop and sync nothing until they are back at the office.
Free download · 1000 free tokens on verified sign-up (about 20 tests) · tokens never expire · no subscription.
